You have two choices after taking a Level 4 ESL class:

1. Take additional ESL classes

You do not need to complete every Level 4 class, but if you feel that you still need to improve in a certain area, for example grammar, then you should continue taking more ESL classes.

2. Take college Composition Classes

You will need to take the EdReady English placement test first. You can take this placement test from home. Please visit the Maricopa EdReady site for detailed steps. There is a step-by-step guide and a helpful video.

Based on your test score, you will have three classes to choose from:

ENG 107: First Year Composition and ENG 100AC (4 credits)

This class is the equivalent of ENG 101, but it is designed for nonnative English speakers. You can fulfill the requirements of ENG 101 while still perfecting your language skills. There is extra time available to help you with your writing, too. This is a 4-credit class. If ENG 107 is not available or does not fit with your schedule, you can also take ENG 101.

prerequisites: EdReady English score of 60 or higher

ENG 107: First-Year Composition (3 credits)

This class is the equivalent of ENG 101, but it is designed for nonnative speakers of English. You can fulfill the requirements of ENG 101 while still perfecting your language skills.  If ENG 107 is not available or does not fit with your schedule, you can also take ENG 101.

prerequisites: EdReady English score of 80 or higher

Alt 100: Academic Literacy through Integrated Reading and Writing (4 credits)

This class prepares you for college level reading and writing intensive courses as well as career-related reading and writing tasks.

Prerequisites: EdReady English score of 59 or higher and EdReady College Reading score of 74 or higher.

Many students also choose to take reading and math classes after completing Level 4 ESL classes. You will need to take the EdReady College Reading and Quantitative Reasoning Placement Tests. You can choose classes based on your scores.
