Description

Introduction to Counseling (CAP120)

Introduction to the field of counseling with a focus on skills and competencies needed as a mental health practitioner. Foundations of counseling including counseling theories, ethical considerations, prevention and intervention topics, and multicultural counseling practices. Prerequisites: None.

The Counselor in a Multicultural Society (CAP220)

Current theories and research on culture, race and ethnicity, gender and other aspects of cultural diversity in a multicultural society through the lens of counseling. Focus on personal perspectives, will explore themes, theories, topics and research related to power, privilege and oppression in the United States as applied to counseling discipline. Prerequisites: None. CPD240-Introduction to Counseling Skills Introduction to basic skills and techniques used in the counseling field. Focuses on active listening, self-awareness, and other related skills.

Career and Professional Preparation for the Helping Professions (CAP260)

Overview of the process of career and life planning through self-awareness for students interested in helping fields. Focus on current occupational trends and outlook, the learning models of the individual, the world of work, and decision-making. Emphasis on individual application and workplace diversity. Design materials for use in the professional world such as resumes, online presence, career portfolio.

BHS150: Intro to Behavioral Health & Soc. Serv. Survey of the behavioral health and social services professions, including scope of practice and training requirements. Exploration of employment opportunities in the field and self-assessment/academic planning for a career in mental health. Overview of mental health disorders and first responder skills in a mental health crisis situation. Prerequisites: None.  General Education Designations: H, SB, SCB
BHS155: Professional Resiliency & Well-Being Exploration of building human resilience and well-being to prevent burnout, traumatic stress, and compassion fatigue for social services and mental health professionals, healthcare providers, emergency first responders, and other relationship-intense occupations. Causes, symptoms, and effects of traumatic stress, burnout compassion fatigue and other work-related stress. Focus on enhancing quality of life and improving a healthy lifestyle by incorporating evidenced-based practices in psychological and emotional resilience training, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, positive psychology, prevention, peer support, and self-care, including nutrition, exercise, and sleep.  Prerequisites: None.  General Education Designations: SB, SCB
BHS175: Trauma-Informed Care & Recovery Treatment Comprehensive overview of various types of trauma, neurobiological effects of traumatic stress, and ethics associated in working with a trauma survivor. Concepts and skills needed to become a fully functioning trauma-informed caregiver professional in the mental health and primary care setting.  Prerequisites: None.  General Education Designations: SB, SCB
BHS230:  Crisis and Trauma Stabilization Theoretical and applied foundation designed for behavioral health service providers working with people in crisis. Examines the phenomena and dynamics of crises and emergencies, as well as the related strategies/modalities. Prerequisites: None.
BHS235:  Emergency Mental Health Crisis Response and Recovery, Comprehensive study of natural and human-caused disasters and their effects on the trauma survivor. Introduction to basic emergency mental health interventions to help stabilize those experiencing crisis following critical incident disasters. Prerequisites: None.

Peer Mentor Training (CPD250)

Development and application of beginning skills and knowledge required to establish and maintain effective peer helping relationships in a college setting. Focus on the role, function, and responsibilities of the peer mentor; verbal and nonverbal communication skills; problem solving; and strategies and resources for first-year student success. Includes on-campus service-learning component

Focus on student success through exploration of academic, career and life skills. Includes study of goal-setting/success strategies, academic mindset and financial literacy. Develop an education/career plan utilizing career assessments and other college resources.

Focus on student success through exploration of academic, career, and life skills. Includes study of goal-setting/success strategies, academic mindset, interpersonal skills, financial literacy, self-care strategies, diverse perspectives, and campus tools and resources. Develop an education/career plan utilizing career assessments and other college resources.
