Admission Requirements


The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Elementary Education and Special Education (BAEE/SPED) provides an experiential four-year curriculum in Elementary Education (K-8) and Special Education (K-12). This program prepares pre-service teachers to educate diverse learners. Upon completion of the BAEE/SPED, a student will be eligible to seek the Standard Arizona Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education (K-8), Standard Arizona Teaching Certificate in Special Education (K-12), and the Structured English Immersion Endorsement.

To continue your pathway to a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Special Education, you need to complete an additional application to verify that the appropriate state testing has been completed and so that our colleges can provide the necessary support to finish the degree and prepare for student teaching and certification.

Completion of Associate in Arts, Elementary Education (AAEE) OR equivalent coursework

*Meet with your advisor to ensure requirements are met.

The Associate in Arts, Elementary Education (AAEE) provides the first two years of a four-year curriculum for the student who plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.

Completion of the Arizona Constitution and United States Constitution course(s).


  • GCU/POS113 U.S. and AZ Social Studies (3) OR
  • HIS103 U.S. History to1865 (3) OR POS 110 American National Government (3) AND POS 221 AZ Constitution (1) OR
  • POS 220 U.S. and AZ Constitution (3)

Valid Identity Verified Print (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card

Arizona state law requires any person who participates in a teacher preparation program to obtain an “Identity Verified Print” (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card.

Two reference forms

You do not need letters of recommendation. You will enter two names and email addresses of individuals who can speak to your character. A reference form will be sent to the individual's email address for their completion.  Family members may not be used.

A passing score on the Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments (AEPA) Elementary Subtest 1 and 2 (content exams)

These assessments test your proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, health, and fitness.  

The cost for each test is 50.00 (100.00 total). Follow these steps: Prepare for the test, register and pay for the test, and take the test.

Official Transcripts for courses meeting course requirements for colleges other than Maricopa Community College, if applicable.  *Please note, if you are a MCCCD student, you do not need to upload your transcripts.


Minimum 2.50 cumulative grade point average (GPA)


Formal application and admission to the bachelor's degree program are required.
Teacher candidates may be conditionally admitted if any requirements above are not met
