Emerging Leaders

Emerging Leaders is a 3-level nationally recognized leadership development program at PVCC. All courses are experiential learning that designed to develop where instead of a lecture course, Emerging Leaders is activity based, meets six times during the semester (including a weekend retreat), earning two college credits at each level.

Emerging Leaders consists of three distinct levels:

Learn about yourself and what skills you can bring to a team.

Come to understand what people working in a team value in you. Learn to lead by being an active part of the work process. The 1-Day retreat at the Black Mountain Campus will help you become more mindful. Learn about how others work and appreciate their values. Come to help create positive social change in your world. 8 hours of service learning volunteering will help you make the world a better place and inform your fellow students about important issues in your world.

Provides skills and practice for group facilitation of leadership activities. The program will focus on the development of confidence, communication and organizational skills to promote effective groups.

Builds skills in the areas of: Communication, Processing, Participant Assessment, Event planning, Teaching Skills, Team-building, Group Dynamics, Risk Management, and Flexibility/Adaptability.

Meeting Times:

  • Be available for all the EL1 and/or EL2 meeting times (Emerging Leaders Level 1 and/or 2 *see above*)
  • Needs to make time available to meet once a week for training (LDR 201 class)

Requirements:

  • Fill out applications - see Mike Ho for an application
  • Complete EL1 and/or EL2 with a B or better
  • Enroll in LDR 201 class

Enroll in the 2 credit LDR101, LDR102, or LDR 201. The total cost for the program is the cost of a 2 credit course plus a course fees.

Yes, LDR101 transfers to all three state universities as an elective. You will need elective credits to receive an associate's degree.

No. Although there may be other LDR courses, The Emerging Leaders retreat based program, with three program levels, is unique to Paradise Valley Community College. You are encouraged to select the leadership program that best fits your needs and schedule!

Emerging Leaders uses the Social Change Model. This model emphasizes the application of Seven Leadership Values through group activities, experiential education, and service learning opportunities. The program emphasizes non-hierarchical leadership and explores individual's potential to create positive change.

Leadership for Social Change involves becoming aware of the needs in the local community. The Emerging Leaders Program requires the completion of 8 hours of community service, which can be performed in groups at any number of approved community organizations.
