Volunteering isn’t just about giving back — it’s about growing, connecting, and discovering new ways to make a difference. During National Volunteer Week, Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) students and staff embraced this spirit of service by volunteering at Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore in Phoenix.
PVCC’s Career Services John McCrudden organized volunteers to help refresh the exterior of the ReStore facility. It was more than just a day of painting and repairs — it was a valuable service learning experience where participants also learned how crucial volunteers are to the success of nonprofit organizations.
“This was a wonderful opportunity for our students and alumni to see firsthand the impact they can have on the community,” said McCrudden. “The enthusiasm and teamwork displayed by everyone who participated truly captured the spirit of PVCC.”
For many students, it was their first time participating in a service project. Business student Ever Toyosima shared, “It was my first time volunteering with PVCC and Habitat for Humanity, and it was an amazing learning experience. Working together with everyone was fun, and it really opened my eyes to how many ways service can make an impact. Opportunities like this help you grow your perspective and strengthen the connections you make through PVCC.”
Behavioral science student Meera Chakkera also volunteered for the first time.“This experience showed me that hard work truly pays off," Chakkerra said. “It was a positive experience, and it reminded me that change happens when you allow it to happen.”
