PVCC Dance Highlight: Sonia Valle

Sonia comes from an artistic family in which music was very important; singing was especially influential. At age 15, she started piano lessons with her brother who holds a PhD in music. Sonia helped establish a well-known electronic music group in Mexico. She was unsure of navigating college due to her being a first-generation college student, however, Sonia settled on a double major in international business and dance at San Diego State University. She tried working in international business with a Chinese company as an intern, but realized she disliked being behind a desk. She knew at this point she needed to follow her passion and continue her career in dance. She briefly moved to New York to start a professional career; however, for personal reasons, she returned to San Diego. She decided to go into education and applied to different colleges. She was offered a full scholarship at Arizona State University (ASU) where she received an MFA in dance. She received the Friends of dance at ASU Award for a solo she created her senior year. After graduation, she danced with Ludwig Dance Company while she began applying for dance positions. Sonia was chosen from over 40 applicants to land the full-time position at Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) where she facilitated the AAFA Emphasis in Dance. Sonia also leads a professional dance collective, SVG Dance, and has taught several times in Puebla, Mexico, where she has a positive impact on young Mexican dancers.

Describe your personality in 3-5 words.

Passionate, creative, a problem-solver, compassionate and an introvert.

What excites you about the PVCC dance program?

We are an innovative and creative program. Our innovation comes from challenges we face, such as the pandemic. Even if we cannot physically be together, we discover a path to present work from students and faculty through video and other mediums.

What are your dreams for the future?

I strive to bring awareness to the different styles of dance through acceptance and understanding for all dance styles. I also work to create well-rounded dancers and performers. In addition, I want to increase awareness and understanding of non-Western dance forms such as West African, Chinese and Brazilian cultural dance.

Any secret/fun/interesting talents other than being a dancer?

I am a singer and participate in a choir. I'm also a jewelry maker, seamstress, articulated paper doll creator, and a visual artist specializing in pastels. I met my husband while on a study abroad in Argentina, and we share a passion for Argentine Tango.
