Open Educational Resources

 

Are Open Textbooks in Your Future?

Open educational resources are educational materials and resources offered freely and openly for anyone to use and under some licenses to re-mix, improve and redistribute. Open educational resources include:

  • Full courses, course materials, content modules, learning objects, collections, textbooks, lecture captures and journals.
  • Software to support the creation, delivery, use and improvement of open learning content including searching and organization of content, content and learning management systems, content development tools, and on-line learning communities.

In the Summer of 2013, the Maricopa Millions OER Project was launched.  It is a district-wide effort to significantly increase the use of "no cost" and "low cost" instead of expensive textbooks in many courses at the ten colleges in the Maricopa Community Colleges. What do students have to say about OER?  

In the Fall of 2013, we began meeting with student focus groups.  We asked them questions about their experiences with Open Educational Resources.  Check out this short video with a few of their responses:
