A Few Film Recommendations from Professor Gary A. Zaro, Humanities Faculty, Director of The International Film Festival @ PVCC

A Few Film Recommendations from Professor Gary A. Zaro, Humanities Faculty, Director of The International Film Festival @ PVCC

1. If you wanted to screen a film from the classic era that took on the established patriarchal views of women in society, I would suggest any film starring Katharine Hepburn (Adam's Rib, Woman of the Year, The Philadelphia Story, Pat and Mike, etc.). Or Marilyn Monroe if you're looking for the movie star/sex symbol/cultural influencer angle (Some Like It Hot, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch, The Prince and the Showgirl, etc.). Or, a female director of the era (a rarity since directing has been the biggest challenge for women to break into in the film business), then Ida Lupino's The Bigamist (1953) would be great, plus she starred in it and was the first woman to direct herself in a film.

2. More contemporary, a great film is Norma Rae (1979) starring Sally Field. It's an excellent film that reinforced the ideas and actions of the Women's Liberation Movement of the 70s and it's based on a real woman.

3. If you want to go a little more with comedy but still a strong feminist theme and a true story, then A League of the Their Own (1992) would be a great choice.

4. If you want to go with a contemporary female director then I would suggest Greta Gerwig (Little Women or Lady Bird). Also, Kathryn Bigelow was the first woman to win an Oscar for Best Director (The Hurt Locker). Her best feminist film is Zero Dark 30 starring Jessica Chastain. It's long but also based on a real woman and recent events.
