Already completed your 100 and 200-level courses? Apply to the BAEE/SPED Teacher Educator Preparation Program (Upper-Division Classes)

To continue your pathway to a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Special Education, you need to complete an additional application to verify that the appropriate state testing has been completed and so that our colleges can provide the necessary support to finish the degree and prepare for student teaching and certification.

Overview of BAEE/SPED and the Teacher Educator Preparation Admissions Process

As part of this process, you will be prompted to request transcripts from any previous colleges or universities you attended outside of the Maricopa Community Colleges.

*For students who are already established at PVCC, update your degree plan by selecting BA, Elementary and Special Education.

Step 2:

Enroll in lower-division classes and connect with an Education Advisor.

Meet with the Educator Preparation Student Success Team. Email [email protected] to schedule an appointment to review whether you have completed, or will complete by the end of the current and upcoming semester, the following course requirements:
 

  1. Completion of Associate in Arts, Elementary Education (AAEE) OR coursework equivalent to requirements of Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC), MAT256, MAT257, EDU221, and (EED222 or EDU222).
  2. Completion of the Arizona Constitution and United States Constitution course(s).

    HIS 103 or POS 110 and POS 221
    OR
    POS 113 OR GCU 113 OR POS 220.

If you do not meet these requirements, you will work with your advisor to enroll in the additional lower-division classes needed to apply for the BAEE/SPED Teacher Educator Preparation Program (Upper-Division Classes).

When you are within a semester of completing the lower-division requirements, apply for the BAEE/SPED Teacher Educator Preparation Program (Upper-Division Classes)

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Elementary Education and Special Education (BAEE/SPED) provides an experiential four-year curriculum in Elementary Education (K-8) and Special Education (K-12). This program prepares pre-service teachers to educate diverse learners. Upon completion of the BAEE/SPED, a student will be eligible to seek the Standard Arizona Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education (K-8), Standard Arizona Teaching Certificate in Special Education (K-12), and the Structured English Immersion Endorsement.

The Associate in Arts, Elementary Education (AAEE) provides the first two years of a four-year curriculum for the student who plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.

Valid Identity Verified Print (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card

Arizona state law requires any person who participates in a teacher preparation program to obtain an “Identity Verified Print” (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card.

Two reference forms You do not need letters of recommendation. You will enter two names and email addresses of individuals who can speak to your character. A reference form will be sent to the individual's email address for their completion.  Family members may not be used.

A passing score on the Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments (AEPA) Elementary Subtest 1 and 2 (content exams)

3.0 GPA with all lower-level degree requirements completed may proceed without taking the AEPA exam

Requirements:
Applicants must NOW utilize a 3.0 GPA, rather than take Subtests I and II of the NES exams: 

  • If you meet the 3.0 GPA requirement, you may proceed without taking the AEPA exam. Please contact an Advisor to request a GPA Calculation document which can be submitted in lieu of AEPA/NES test results for your Upper Division admission application.
  • If your GPA is below 3.0, you will need to discuss options with an advisor, which may include:
    • Taking the AEPA exam (passing both subtests allows you to move forward).
    • Retaking lower-division coursework to achieve a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
    • Conditional admission may be possible, but you must meet the requirement before student teaching.

AEPA Information: 
These assessments test your proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, health, and fitness.

The cost for each test is 85.00. Follow these steps: Prepare for the test, register and pay for the test, and take the test.

Official Transcripts for courses meeting course requirements for colleges other than Maricopa Community College, if applicable.  *Please note, if you are a MCCCD student, you do not need to upload your transcripts.  
Minimum 2.50 cumulative grade point average (GPA)  

Formal application and admission to the bachelor's degree program are required.
Teacher candidates may be conditionally admitted if any requirements above are not met
