Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) music graduate Michael Brutus has been awarded the highly competitive Berklee World Tour Scholarship, earning the opportunity to study this fall at Berklee College of Music's international campus in Valencia, Spain.
Brutus, who graduated from PVCC in May 2026 with an Associate of Arts in Music, was selected for the prestigious scholarship after a journey marked by persistence, artistic growth, and a willingness to follow his passion for music.
"Music has been my lifeline, my way to speak, connect, and dream for as long as I can remember," Brutus said. "As I step onto the global stage, I carry with me the hopes of many generations, and every note that brought me here."
Since childhood, Brutus has been drawn to creativity in all its forms. Whether through music, dance, film, performance, or writing, he found joy in artistic expression from an early age. Inspired by the storytelling found in Marvel films and Disney classics, he first began writing stories before eventually turning to songwriting as a way to channel his imagination and curiosity.
“I always found myself gravitating back to creative spaces,” said Brutus. “I loved being around people who were making music, performing, writing, or creating something meaningful.”
Although creativity remained a constant throughout his life, finding the right academic path took time. In 2016, Brutus enrolled at Grand Canyon University (GCU) to study software engineering; later transferring to PVCC’s sister college Estrella Mountain Community College, switching his major to marketing. Yet despite his academic progress, he felt something was missing.
While attending Estrella Mountain, Brutus often found himself drawn to the college's performing arts center, spending time between classes watching rehearsals and performances from a quiet corner of the building. There, he discovered a community of artists who encouraged him to participate in a talent show. Taking a leap of faith, Brutus performed the national anthem and found himself fully embracing his musical abilities.
That experience was a clarifying moment. Determined to learn more about himself and the world around him, Brutus stepped away from school and traveled extensively, visiting Germany, Spain, Italy, Mexico, Los Angeles, and New York City.
"I felt I had to go into the real world; I felt called to reach more people," he said. "Pursuing music outside of my studies became the ultimate test of putting my passion into practice. It's a journey I'm still on, navigating life as an independent artist and a young adult while pursuing the freedom to create the music I envision."
When he returned to higher education, he found exactly what he was looking for at PVCC. In 2025, Brutus enrolled in PVCC’s music program, immersing himself in coursework while building meaningful relationships with fellow musicians, faculty members, and collaborators. He became involved in a rock band at PVCC called Lucidity with five other PVCC musicians and also worked with the college’s dance program.
"I submerged myself in my music and art, and it felt really good," he said.
His talent and dedication quickly earned recognition. Earlier this year, Brutus was named one of the Maricopa County Community College District's 2025-2026 Artists of Promise top honorees for Music Composition. Performing under the stage name "Brutus," he captured first place in the songwriting category for his remix of Judas, a song he originally wrote and later reimagined for the competition.
As he developed the composition, Brutus leaned heavily on the guidance of PVCC music instructor Bradford Knights, particularly while learning music theory and refining the song's harmonic structure.
"Michael Brutus is a special person,” Knights said. “I was not only impressed at his songwriting ability and his singing talents, but more importantly what a genuinely good human he is.”
PVCC Music Professor Kevin Lewis agreed saying, “The moment I met Michael, there was a presence about him that just drew me in. Just like that calculated calmness of his demeanor, there’s also an artist's expression bubbling underneath the surface just waiting for the right moment to present itself. It was such an honor to perform with him at the Artist of Promise Gala; not only to be his support band along with Gabby Issac, but to be able to show him that ‘support’ doesn’t just stop at the end of class.”
Brutus has also experienced success beyond the classroom. His remix of Fight What We Care For climbed into the Top 50 of the global electronic charts on iTunes, further demonstrating his ability to connect with audiences through original music.
Now, with the Berklee World Tour Scholarship opening doors to one of the world's premier music institutions, Brutus is preparing for the next chapter of his artistic journey. And while scholarships and financial aid will cover a substantial portion of his educational expenses, Brutus continues to seek additional grants, partnerships, internships, and sponsorship opportunities to close the remaining financial gap and make his global studies possible.
For Brutus, the investment is about more than personal success; it’s about honoring the years of work, sacrifice, and determination that brought him to this moment, while using music to create meaningful connections across cultures and communities.
