New Students - Tips for Online Learning Success

Number one thing to remember is to reach out to your instructors and classmates regularly. They want to hear from you and together, find new and innovative ways to teach and learn. Your suggestions and input always make the transition easier, creating a stronger, fuller experience. To be successful learning at home:

  • Create a designated workspace with good lighting
  • Stay mentally focused with minimal distractions
  • Work on a computer not your phone
  • Make sure you have good WiFi connection
  • Make a schedule, not just for studying, but eating sleeping, and exercising
  • Log on frequently to stay on top of things

Proper nutrition is paramount to good study and learning habits as well. Eating foods that help blood flow to the brain, creates a clearer and more inspired atmosphere. Try some of the following:

  1. Omega-3’s found in wild fish and game help memory, language, creativity and attention.
  2. Nuts, eggs contain boosting choline, an important B complex related nutrient.
  3. Stay hydrated and well rested.

Lastly, prepare yourself mentally to reduce stress, and work smarter not harder through planning and preparation.

  • Don’t procrastinate. Reviewing your notes and materials regularly.
  • Listening is key. Pay close attention during your class to maximize retention and be clear on the information being taught.
  • Plan a study session with classmates via a chat room. Reviewing information with others in your same boat as you can significantly help you make sense of the subject matter.
  • Reach out to your instructor or TA with any questions prior to tests. Remember, they want to see you succeed.
