English Literature

Students at any college can earn an award (degree or cert) in any of these programs. However, students may need to complete certain courses at other colleges within the District.

Program Overview

Do you have a love of the written word and want to explore and analyze some of life’s most significant questions and themes? If so, the English Literature program awaits you. This program provides the first two years of a 4-year curriculum for those who wish to specialize in literary and cultural studies. A degree in English literature opens the door to a variety of career possibilities, including education, publishing, writing, pharmaceuticals, medicine, and engineering.

The English Literature program focuses on improving your writing and communication skills for a range of audiences and contexts, focusing specifically on scholarly concepts and conventions within the field of English studies. You’ll put on your critical thinking hat to analyze literature in social, cultural, and historical contexts, as well as genres, movements, national traditions, and themes. You will learn how to develop and support textual analysis by incorporating theory, scholarly work, and personal insights.
