Cooler Weather Means Hiking Season

It’s hiking season! When the weather cools down here in the Valley, that’s our cue to get out and soak up that fresh air. So, if you enjoy the outdoors, nature, and meeting new friends, check out Paradise Valley Community College’s Outdoor Adventure Club and start hiking.

“Many different types of students have come together to experience nature,” said Justine Devaul, a former PVCC student, who recently transferred to the University of Arizona to complete her bachelor’s degree. “Each trip is so much fun and definitely a highlight of my college experience. I can speak for a few others in that they feel the same way. They are learning to be confident in themselves in social settings, as well as being able to push themselves out of their comfort zones.”

“The club has been a great way to take a break from school and home stresses. It's a great way to get healthy without really thinking about it. It's also a great place if you just need someone to talk to,” said PVCC Student Andrew Svirskas, who is studying Mechatronics engineering. “I've grown a lot because of the club in many ways.”

Svirskas said the hikes are normally “simple and casual,” and the group takes breaks often along the trails. “Persistence is key and it makes it a lot easier to keep going when you're with people you like.”

The Outdoor Adventure Club normally hikes once or twice each weekend, but members can pick and choose when to attend. For more information, contact pvccoutdooradventureclub@gmail.com.

“Student Life is a great way to meet people, feel empowered, and make a difference,” said Mike Ho, Student Services manager. “Clubs are a ‘learning lab’ and as a member of a club, students experience hands-on learning and thought-provoking encounters that help them to develop meaningful, lifelong educational relationships that help students reach their full potential.”
