Dr. Leila Palis has been English faculty at PVCC since 2005. Leila is proud to be the daughter of an immigrant and was the first female on her father’s side of the family to graduate from college. Leila has been working with immigrants and refugees for almost 25 years as both a volunteer and as a professor. She is currently the Director of PVCC’s English Language Program and teaches ESL and English composition classes.

Leila’s research interests include educational neuroscience and its implications for the college classroom, increasing the college success of nonnative English speakers, and closing achievement gaps in higher education. Leila has received several grants, including an MMOER Grant to complete MCCCD Free Write, a free online writing resource for teachers and students, and a PVCC Summer grant to develop Understanding the Refugee Experience through Literature, a collection of refugee-written literature.
