Artists of Promise Dance Competition

 
Artists of Promise Dance Competition

Each year, the Maricopa Community Colleges sponsor a districtwide competition to encourage and recognize student achievement in the following categories:

  • Solo Choreography
  • Solo Performance
  • Group Choreography
  • Group Performance

Winning students will be selected to have their dance shown at the Artists of Promise Performance in April of 2022.

Competitions Details

Eligibility Requirements

  • All Choreography must be original student work.
  • MCCCD faculty are NOT eligible to apply or perform in the competition.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in dance at one of the MCCCD Colleges during 2021-2022.
  • Applicants are limited to one entry per category (Performance and Choreography).
    • Example 1: Submit the same piece for both performance and choreography.
    • Example 2: Submit a solo for performance and a group for choreography or vice versa.

Choreography Competition

Choreography must be original student work developed by the student applicant. The choreographer must be a student taking a for-credit dance class at the Maricopa Community Colleges during the 2021-2022 school year. Full-time or adjunct faculty, who may be enrolled in college courses, are NOT eligible to apply or choreograph for the competition as a student. Applicants are limited to submitting one entry per category in the Solo Choreography Competition. There will be no substitutions or changes accepted after submission of the application -- no exceptions.

Time Limits

  • Solo Choreography: Minimum of three (3) minutes; Maximum of five (5) minutes.
  • Group Choreography: Minimum of four (4) minutes; Maximum of twelve (12) minutes.

Submission and Judging Process

Entry Process Opens: Monday, December 6, 2021

Student Entry Deadline: February 1, 2022, by 5:00 p.m.

  • Music Due by February 1, 2022
    • Format: .wav files preferred but Music can be in an .mp3, .wav or .aiff file.
    • Title file: AOP-2022 / College / Choreographer / Title of choreography
    • Email music to rebecca.rabideau@gccaz.edu
  • Submissions without dance program director approval will be disqualified
  • Prior to completing and submitting your application, you will need to gather the following information from all other choreographers and dancers involved (if any):
    • First and Last name as it appears in enrollment records
    • Student MEID
    • Student ID number 
    • Student email (MEID@maricopa.edu)   
  • Don’t forget to hit “SUBMIT”
    • Once submitted, you cannot go back and edit your application
    • No substitutions or changes will be accepted after the submission of the application
  • Complete and Submit a Student Competition Form (online)
  • Name files according to the format listed in the application
  • In-person adjudication will take place on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at Glendale Community College (PAC).
  • A full schedule will be available on February 7, 2022
  • Failure to arrive at the appointed adjudication time will result in disqualification.

Awards

  • First place work in each category will have their dance presented at the Artists of Promise virtual performance scheduled in April 2022.
  • All awards will be issued via U.S. Mail shortly after the Artists of Promise.
    • $300 for first place;
    • $200 for second place;
    • $100 for first place
