PVCC Athletics has much to be thankful for this season. Men’s and Women’s Cross Country placed 4th and 14th respectively at the NJCAA National Championships and the Women’s Soccer team won the NJCAA Region I and West District Championships to advance to the NJCAA National Tournament. These student athletes have shown passion and determination both in their sport and their education.
PVCC Athletic Director, Christina Hundley proudly recognizes that these teams have put PVCC on the national stage once again. They competed against teams from around the country at the highest level and represented PVCC and Maricopa Community Colleges with class.
When asked what makes these teams successful, Hundley attributes it to, “the legacy of past teams having won multiple National Championships and the desire to keep that legacy alive; the consistency Cross Country Head Coach, Dave Barney, has provided in cultivating and recruiting top individuals; and, that PVCC draws students who are super driven for themselves and their team.”
PVCC student-athletes learn many life lessons during the year. They face adversity, and they learn how to respond and build on it. They learn to work with their team and to communicate with others. They learn to manage their time to balance practice, school, work and family.
Hundley emphasizes that community support is key to their success. Support for scholarships or just coming out to a game and cheering on the home team is always welcome! Admission is free to athletic events (except post season).
PVCC congratulates these teams, as well as all of its student-athletes in achieving success on the field and in the classroom.
In addition, PVCC celebrates Coach Barney for receiving NJCAA Men’s Cross Country National Coach of the Year honors. The college is grateful for the significant impact Coach Barney has made at PVCC during his more than 20-year tenure.
