The PVCC Women’s Soccer team (19-4-1) defeated Salt Lake Community College (13-2-2) 2-1 on Saturday to claim the NJCAA West District Championship. With the win, the Pumas advanced to the NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer National Tournament being held November 12-17 in Foley, AL.
The Bruins of Salt Lake, came out strong in the first half, having 10 shots on goal to the Pumas two. The Bruins and Pumas were unable to capitalize on any shots in the first half and the game was 0-0 at halftime.
In the second half of the game, the Bruins struck first in the 55th minute of the game when Callie Fisher scored on a free kick from Baylie Saunders. In the 69th minute of the game, the Pumas tied it up when Yulissa Rascon scored off a corner kick with assists by Paola Sanchez and Tessa Alexopoulos. Six minutes later, the Pumas took the lead when Sanchez scored on a free kick. The Pumas were able to hold off the Bruins for the final 15 minutes of the game and claim the NJCAA West District Championship.
The Pumas will head into the National Championships as the 10 seed. They will play their first game on Monday, November 12, at 5:00pm CT against #3 Iowa Western Community College.
