The PVCC Women’s Soccer team (18-4-1) defeated the #1 team in the NJCAA, and previously undefeated, Arizona Western (21-1) 4-0 on Saturday night to win the NJCAA Region I Championship.

The Pumas, who had lost their previous two meetings with the Matadors in the regular season, came out strong and scored in the 12th minute of the game. Sophomore Karina Lopez Martinez hit a cross to the center of the field where Sophomore Katie Townsend was able to put a head on it and knock it into the back of the net. Just two minutes later, the Pumas went up 2-0 when Freshman Marisela Labansat scored on an assist from Freshman Bailey Rozendaal. In the 34th minute of the game, Katie Townsend scored her second goal of the game to give the Pumas a 3-0 lead.

In the second half, Marisela Labansat put the game out of reach in the 63rd minute when she scored on an assist from Freshman Tessa Alexopoulos. The Pumas were able to shut down the Matadors offense and hold them to zero goals for the first time all season. Labansat was named the Region I MVP with her two goals.

The Pumas will host Region 18's Salt Lake Community College (13-1-2) on Saturday, November 3 at 1:00pm in the West District Championship game. The winner of that game will go onto the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Foley, Alabama, November 12-17.

Because Saturday's game is a Region 1 hosted event, there will be an entry fee, adults are $5, students/seniors are $3, and children 12 and under are free.

Congratulations and Good Luck Pumas!
