Puma Women’s Soccer successfully defended their NJCAA Region I championship title over the course of the week with three 1-0 performances. They will now travel to Snow College in Ephraim, UT for the November 9 NJCAA West District Championship and play for a spot in the NJCAA National Tournament.
The Region I Tournament started at home on October 29. The Pumas took on the Bears of Phoenix College. The first half was a defensive battle as only two shots were put on frame, both by the Bears. In the second half PV was able to get into the attack. In the 53rd minute, Justine Cardwell scored the only goal of the game with a pass from Diana Sanchez.
On Halloween night the Pumas traveled to take on Chandler-Gilbert in the semifinals. Once again, the Puma defense had to stay strong as the Coyotes out shot PV 6-2. In the 63rd minute, Diana Sanchez made sure one of the Pumas' two shots counted as she put the Pumas up 1-0.
In the championship game on Saturday, PV faced Arizona Western for the third time this season. The first two regular season games went the full distance and resulted in ties. The championship was heading to a tie and kicks from the mark to determine a winner when the Pumas found the back of the net. With 54 seconds left in the second overtime period Paola Sanchez sent a corner kick into the box that found the head of Yuli Rascon-Bandilla for the game winner.
The Pumas will face Snow College at 6pm on Saturday in Ephraim, Utah.
