Puma Softball scored a season high 22 runs in game two against Pima Community College on Tuesday. The Pumas (29-17), swept the Aztecs in Tucson, taking the first game 8-4 and the second game 22-19.
In game one, the Pumas got off to an early 1-0 lead after Marissa Ibarra-Palomo doubled in a run in the top of the first inning. After the Aztecs tied it up in the bottom of the first, the Pumas tacked on two more runs in the top of the second and never lost the lead.
Yessika Galaz took the mound for the Pumas, pitching a complete game, allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out three. The Pumas collected 14 hits en route to the win.
In game two of the series, the Pumas got off to a hot start, scoring eight runs in the top of the first inning on doubles by Madison Wiley, Maya Lentz, and Diondra Bodman. The Pumas tacked on one more run in the second inning and then came alive again in the fourth inning, putting up nine runs.
With an 18-3 lead, the Pumas gave up six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. PV scored two in the sixth but gave up an astonishing 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 20-19. The Pumas did not let that get them down as they scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning and then shut down the Aztecs offense in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to take the game 22-19.
The Pumas had 17 hits in the game including five doubles and two home runs, one by Wiley and the other by Freshman Meaghan Riggs.
The Pumas play their last regular series at home on Saturday, April 28 against GateWay. First pitch is at 12:00pm.
