The #3 PVCC Women’s Soccer team (17-4-1) upset #2 Phoenix College (17-3-1) in the semifinals of the NJCAA Region I Playoffs. The Pumas advance to play #1 Arizona Western (21-0) on Saturday night in the Region I Finals.
The first half was back and forth with the Pumas getting off to another quick lead when Sophomore Katie Townsend scored in the sixth minute to give the Pumas a 1-0 lead. The Bears came back and tied it in the 14th minute on a goal by Lydiana Tavison, only to have the Pumas take the lead again in the 19th minute off a goal by Sophomore Mikayla Thomas. Three minutes later however, the Bears tied it up again at 2-2 when Eliudth Gonzalez scored. In the 43rd minute of the game, the Bears took a lead 3-2 on a goal by Maria Del Rio.
Down 3-2 most of the second half, the Pumas kept fighting. In the 88th minute of the game, Sophomore Karina Lopez Martinez scored the equalizing goal to extend the game into overtime. In the 97th minute, Sophomore Ashley Gibson scored the winning goal with assists by both Lopez Martinez and Townsend to send the Pumas to the Region I Final.
The Pumas will face the #1 team in the NJCAA, Arizona Western, on Saturday, October 27 at 7:00pm. The game will be held at Arizona Western in Yuma, AZ.
Because the game is an NJCAA Region I hosted event, there will be an entry fee; adults are $5, students/seniors are $3.
