Essential Functions

  • Provides nutritional education and instruction on identified diet plans to individual patients, patients in group settings, and patient families based upon physician order and/or nutritional education needs. May provide nutrition education to community.
  • Prioritizes tasks and uses effective time management skills to maintain productivity standards. Assists the dietitian in providing an efficient and cost effective nutrition care program while meeting service excellence standards.
  • In designated areas, performs timely nutrition assessments and may provide screening using designated criteria to identify patients at nutritional risk and appropriately determines the nutritional status of patients by completing assessments based on nutrition practice guidelines.
  • Provides timely follow up and monitoring of patients identified for re-screening and re-assessment and refers patients to the dietitian; documents pertinent information in the medical records and patient plan of care while meeting requirements of regulatory agencies (i.e. Joint Commission, CMS, State and other regulatory agencies).
  • Assists with continuous quality improvement activities and ongoing problem solving and conducts meal rounds as indicated.

Minimum Qualifications
This position requires:
(1) an Associate Degree from an approved Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Dietetic Technician program, and successful passing of the DTR exam (Dietetic Technician, Registered) within 6 months of employment; or
(2) a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics; or
(3) demonstrated equivalent knowledge as typically obtained with 5 years acute-care nutrition experience. 

Preferred Qualifications
Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR); Experience in Nutrition within an acute care setting is preferred.
Additional related education and/or experience preferred.

Duties and responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities of the Administrative Support Clerk include:

  • Receptionist Responsibilities
    • Customer service support
    • Greets visitors and obtains pertinent intake information, notifying appropriate individuals of visitor’s arrival
    • Answers and routes calls, as necessary, to appropriate individuals
    • Accurately takes and delivers messages
    • Maintains log of all calls requiring further action
    • Accepts and signs for packages, and notifies addressee of package arrival
    • Performs a variety of routine clerical tasks
    • Maintains clean and orderly office space
    • Retrieves, sorts and delivers mail
    • Collecting copayment, payment or other fees from patients/clients
  • Scheduling Responsibilities
    • Uses various computer applications, such as Electronic Health Records (EHR), database management and word processing
    • Answers telephones and provides accurate information to callers
    • Creates, maintains, and enters patient data and records into EHR software
    • Manages RD/DTR schedules and patient appointments using EHR software including scheduling, rescheduling and appointment confirmations
    • Requesting and updating patient medical records
  • Secretarial Responsibilities
    • Types and proofs variety of letters, memoranda, forms and reports in an accurate and efficient fashion
    • Establishes and maintains files and records (scanning, electronic filing, etc)
    • Orders office supplies as necessary
    • Performs a variety of clerical duties
    • Oversight and coordination of administration, programs and strategic plan of the organization
  • IF DTR applicant, role may incorporate nutrition responsibilities including:
    • Collaborating with medical providers to identify and connect with patients seeking medical nutrition therapy. Also referring patients out to community resources, if/when needed.
    • Performing appropriate documentation in patient medical records, including nutrition assessment, diagnosis, intervention, monitoring and evaluation.
    • Assisting Registered Dietitian(s) in providing an efficient and cost-effective nutrition care program while meeting service excellence standards based upon the needs and demands of the team.
    • Assisting in office and patient administrative tasks including patient scheduling and support for inquiries from potential patients, as well as, active patients.
    • Developing educational materials and tools.
    • Identifying ways to improve care of patients and make recommendations to referring and/or primary care physicians. Performing research and using results for recommendations on ways to expand and improve nutrition programs.
    • Marketing, promoting, and raising awareness about nutrition services through communication with area health professionals.
    • Participating in quality improvement of the program in conjunction with other services offered.
    • Participating in community outreach and public education programs, including, but not limited to, group presentations.
    • Performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: some previous work-related experience
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • IF DTR applicant: Maintaining credentials and continuing education through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics / Commission on Dietetic Registration
