Headshot and Resume: Optional, but preferable Character Breakdown: Main Roles (character age range) HAROLD HILL (late 20’s-mid 40’s) - A dynamic con man (Baritone) MARCELLUS WASHBURN - Harold's chummy friend (Tenor) MARIAN PAROO (20’s-30’s) - Stuffy, "stuck-up", town librarian & music teacher (Sop) MRS. PAROO (40’s-60’s) - Marian's Irish mom (Mezzo) WINTHROP PAROO - Marian's lisping baby brother (Alto) AMARYLLIS (9-13) - Marian's young piano student (Alto) MAYOR SHINN (40’s-60’s) - A blustery politician EULALIE MACKECKNIE SHINN (30’s – 50’s)- Mayor Shinn's peacock wife (Alto) ZANEETA SHINN (16-22) - The mayor's daffy daughter TOMMY DJILAS (16-22) - The town "bad" boy CHARLIE COWELL (30’s-40’s) - A rival salesman *THE QUARTET (30’-60’s) - Four judgmental school board members, sing in Barbershop harmony (Bass, baritone, tenor, high tenor) * Existing Barbershop Quartets are encouraged to audition as a group. Please call in to schedule a special audition time. There are several supporting roles and a full chorus of townspeople. Check MTI website for character breakdown Prepare: a song and monologue - 1 song (best 24-32 bars) showing your strongest style (lyric, comedic, dramatic). Try to choose something from golden age of musical theater (Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Lowe, etc.) - 1 min monologue (dramatic or comedic) We prefer that auditioners NOT sing with CD's or acapella. Please bring appropriately marked sheet music in the correct key for the piano accompanist. Rehearsals Begin: May 15 Run Dates: June 17, 18, 19, 20, 24, 25, 26 & 27 (possible extension on July 2-4) Show Synopsis: An affectionate tribute to Smalltown, U.S.A. of a bygone era, Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man” follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize – this despite the fact he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall.
