Maricopa District promotes paper-reduction campaign

Maricopa Community Colleges launched a paper- reduction campaign at the end of October with the goal of decreasing paper use by 10 percent.
The campaign, which began on Oct. 26, 2011 and plans to continue to at least 2012, is targeted to reach each of the 10 college campuses in the Maricopa district. According to Sustainability Coordinator Thomas Williams, the paper- reduction campaign is the first districtwide sustainability project.
New PVCC program seeks to empower male students

A new program at Paradise Valley Community College, offering a cohort of classes with the support of a club, aims to empower men and increase their retention rates.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor S tatistics reports a clear gender gap in academic attainment : One in four women has completed college by the age of 23, while only one in seven men have done so . The Maricopa Community College District has addressed this issue by creating a male initiative program. Male students can participate in the program by attending conferences and participating in on-campus clubs. Paradise Valley Community College’s Male Empowerment Network, known as M.E.N., is part of the district-wide initiative.

Rufus Glasper, Ph.D., Chancellor of the Maricopa County Community College District, was awarded the Jerry J. Wistosky Torch of Liberty Award, the highest honor awarded by the Arizona Region of the Anti-Defamation League, during ceremonies held On Oct. 27 at the Phoenix Sheraton Hotel.
