This year, PVCC's dance department expects to bring new
styles of dance to their 2011 Fall Dance collection.

The Fall Dance Collection offers a cultural experience through dance. Multiple styles will reflect different ideas and aesthetics of moving the body and expressing ideas through dance, says Sonia Valle, Dance Program director at Paradise Valley Community College.

Some styles of dance to look forward to are jazz, modern, belly dancing, hip-hop and ballet. Three students will present their own choreography, which is part of their final course work to graduate with a Fine Arts Associate Degree.

“Expect to be surprised by styles because they haven’t been exposed,” says Valle.

“One of the things that is missed, is the learning behind the scenes,” she
says.

The audience focuses on the outcome. There is a lot of work and preparation that goes into it beforehand.

“It is important to recognize how the experience of the performance is part of the learning environment,” says Valle.

It is also a way for students to work together, get to know each other and other artists.

Jasmine Kroll, a PVCC student in the dance program, has performed six times in the dance collection. She says it is a good experience to see what goes into making a performance, and also what it feels like to perform.

A 19-year-old ballet dancer from Master Ballet Academy, Kate Ahern, has performed five times as a guest artist in The Dance Collection.

She says she enjoys having people her age around and to see how they dance because she had always been home schooled.

“Another show is another opportunity to perform and show what you’ve got,” says Ahern. “It’s fun to be on stage.”

The Fall Dance Collection will be presented Dec. 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for the Performing Arts. Costs are as follows: $8 for students, $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and staff and $6 for children.
