GIL- Guided Independent Learning Class Schedules

Guided Independent LearningGuided Independent Learning (GIL) is a course that is print-based, instructor guided, and completely outside of the classroom.

Students must enroll in and start the course by the enrollment deadline (enrollment is limited).

The instructor provides a print-based packet that includes a course syllabus, assignments, and other course materials (print, computer, or other media) to guide the learning pace -- textbooks are to be purchased separately. These packets will be available at the Center for Distance Learning office on or shortly prior to the first day of class; see schedule for start dates.

Assignments are then done on your own and turned in to the same location by the due date for grading.  Turning in assignments timely is very important in this format, as it is equivalent to attendance in a traditional in-person class.  When turning in an assignment, you can check if previous assignments have been graded and ready for pick up.  If the office or campus is closed, secure outside drop boxes are also available.

Tests are scheduled in the Testing Center, unless otherwise specified by the instructor.

Students who are likely to succeed in GIL classes

  • Need to be able to work on their own time
  • Have no or limited access to internet
  • Self-motivated
  • Strong readers
  • Independent learners
