Now in its 16th year, Paradise Pumas Kids College is a structured enrichment program for young people, ages 7-12. Highly investigative learning opportunities are designed to enable children to expand their academic skills and make new friends. The class content is different from regular school curriculum and is taught by specialists in their field.
One Kids College, Two Campuses
Classes are offered at two campuses for Summer 2011. July classes are held at PVCC’s Union Hills campus, located at 18401 N 32nd St, Phoenix, 85032.
June programs are offered at PVCC Black Mountain, which is located at 34250 N 60th St, Scottsdale, 85266. Classes at PVCC Black Mountain are indicated by the room assignment beginning with BlkMtn. Programs are coordinated from PVCC’s Union Hills Campus, and offered in partnership with the YMCA, Foothills Community Foundation and Cave Creek Unified School District. This partnership allows you to choose from more course offerings in one location. Information on this partnership and details for each partner can be found at www.blackmountaincampus.com
Enrollment
Unless otherwise noted, registration is open until each class is filled or until three days before each class starts. Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Payment is due at the time of registration. We regret no exceptions can be made to the age of students enrolling in classes. Your child must have completed the first grade to enroll in classes that would keep him/her on campus all day.
Check-In on the First Day
Upon the first day of class your child must check in at the Kids College registration table in the Q-Building on the Union Hills Campus and in the lobby at PVCC Black Mountain. This allows Kids College staff to become familiar with your child and give them their name tag. The name tag must be worn at all times while on campus. Students will only have to check in once, regardless of how many summer courses they attend.
Drop Off and Pick-up
Parents or guardians are expected to provide all transportation to and from campus. Short-term parking is reserved for Kids College on the west side of campus near J-building at the Union Hills Campus. Parking is widely available at Black Mountain. All children must be escorted to and from their first classes and signed out daily. PVCC Staff will escort children to and from classes if on campus all day, however they must be enrolled in the Pit Stop. See information below. Students may not be left unattended by parents before class and should be picked up immediately at the end of class. Children will be released ONLY to those persons listed on the emergency information form. Any special concerns should be noted on this form and brought to the attention of the Kids College staff. Parents must notify Kids College of any absences at (602) 787-6804.
Lunch at Black Mountain (July classes only)
Kids College staff supervise students at all times. Students enrolled in both morning and afternoon will be escorted to FCF for lunch, after which they will be escorted to afternoon classes. Meals from home are encouraged; however, meals are available for $5-$10 at the Bad Donkey restaurant in the Foothills Center Foundation building. FCF will supervise students during 12 – 1 pm. No additional extended day options are available for students in the morning or evening.
Puma Pit Stop (June classes at Union Hills Campus)
Kids College staff supervise students at all times. Students who are taking a single morning or afternoon class have the option to enroll in the supervised Puma Pit Stop, which provides supervision from 8-9am, 12-1pm and 4-5pm. Students enrolled in both morning and afternoon classes are required to enroll in the Pit Stop, after which they are escorted to lunch and to afternoon classes. The fee is $49 per two-week session (meals not included). Meals from home are required; food service is not available for Kids College in the Q-building.
Campus Safety
We are always concerned for your child's safety. Parents are responsible for walking their child to and from their classroom. Students are not to be dropped off or picked up in the parking lots or dropped off in rooms before an instructor arrives. Instructors will provide assistance moving students to/from the Puma Pit Stop. No child may be left unattended at any time on campus. If this occurs the child will be brought to the Continuing Education office and parents will be called to pick him/her up.
Textbooks and Materials
Books and materials included unless otherwise stated in the description.
Behavior Standards
Appropriate behavioral guidelines are established with the goal of not only maintaining the physical and emotional well being of each student but also of teaching self-discipline, judgment, and manners. Positive disciplinary methods are used to enforce these guidelines. Parents are kept informed of problems as they arise and may be asked to follow through at home in special situations. If program staff determines that a child interferes with the learning of other students, cannot benefit from the program, or presents a danger to other children, parents will be requested to withdraw the child.
Food Service
Food service is not available in the new Q-building at PVCC Union Hills. Children are required to bring lunch from home. The Bad Donkey restaurant is housed on site at the Black Mountain Campus and operates for breakfast and lunch.
Illness and Emergencies
Once registered, Emergency/Medical forms will be sent to you. They can also be found online at www.paradisevalley.edu/ce/kids. These forms MUST be completed and returned to the Division of Continuing Education one week prior to the first day of class. Your child may only begin class if forms are returned.
l Children who are ill should not come to class. Illnesses include a running nose, cough, sore throat, unexplained rashes, swollen glands, head or stomach aches or a fever.
l If a child becomes ill or injured at PVCC, the parent or designated guardian will be notified promptly and will be expected to pick up their child from the program immediately. Parents will be responsible for all costs incurred in such emergencies.
l PVCC staff will administer no medications to your child -- no exceptions.
Class Cancellations
Courses that do not meet a minimum enrollment are subject to cancellation. If this should happen, every effort will be made to notify you by telephone to transfer you to another section, find an alternate course, or process your refund. PVCC reserves the right to cancel classes based on class size, to make other changes as College needs require and to change, without notice, any of the information, requirements, and regulations published in this schedule of classes.
Refund Policy
If a parent/guardian cancels registration, a full refund will be granted if PVCC is notified by 5pm on the Wednesday prior to the class start date. A $25 nonrefundable processing fee will be assessed for cancellations received after this time. All fees are non-refundable after the class starts. If an entire class is cancelled by the College, you will be entitled to a full refund.
Puma Pit Stop
Kids College classes are offered from 9am-12pm, 1-4pm and 4-5pm. If you need extended care options from 8-9am, 12-1pm and 4-5pm, please enroll in the Pit Stop, which provides supervision during non-class times, and also ensures that your child is escorted to classes. Morning dropoff, lunchtime and evening pickup will be from Q-151. You can mix and match drop off and pick up times at your convenience between 8am-5pm. No other options are available outside of those times. Students are required to bring their lunches. No purchase programs are available.

New! Children’s Theatre
This class is fun and enjoyable, while promoting each child’s imagination and knowledge. Beginning on the third day, the class will be made up of three parts: warm-up/improv games and drills, theatre/stage terms and/or mask-making, play rehearsal. This model will continue until the end of the first week. The second week will begin to focus more on warm ups and play rehearsal with the final days dedicated to knowing lines and blocking.
