This two-week intensive jazz program focuses on the large ensemble playing, solo improvisation, and jazz history. Students will work with professional jazz musicians and educators on topics such as tone development, rhythmic components of jazz, and approaches to improvisation, and practice techniques. The session will conclude with a concert featuring the music of such bandleaders/composers as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Thad Jones.  On Friday, July 23, dress rehearsal is scheduled for 4 – 6 pm and the concert performance is scheduled for 7:30 – 9:30 pm.  Students must provide their own instruments.

Students will work with professional jazz musicians and educators in developing solo improvisation ideas, transcribing important solos from jazz history, and developing an understanding of various ways to approach improvisation as it is practiced in specific sub-genres of jazz, including bebop, modal and free jazz. The session will conclude with a concert featuring student combos performing original arrangements of jazz standards as well as original compositions.  On Friday, July 23, dress rehearsal is scheduled for 4 – 6 pm and the concert performance is scheduled for 7:30 – 9:30 pm.  Students must provide their own instruments.

Come enjoy a concert provided by the Kids College Big Band and Jazz Combos.  Hear music composed or made famous by big band artists, such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Thad Jones.  Hear smaller jazz combos improvise and riff their way through jazz standards.  Families with a performing musician will receive two free tickets to the concert.  Additional tickets may be purchased at the Center for Performing Arts for a nominal fee.  Concert is open to the public.
