Welcome to LifeQuest! PVCC offers a variety and activities, cultural events, classes and other learning opportunities for Boomers and Seniors in the North Valley. These programs are offered by Continuing Education, Fitness Center, Business Division, Counseling Division, Learning Support Services, the Center for the Performing Arts and other areas on campus. LifeQuest makes it easier for students and community members to access program and event information.

Exercise classes, fitness memberships, free wellness seminars and Silver Sneakers are just a few of the programs offered by PVCC’s Fitness Center.

Seminars on a variety of topics to meet the needs and interests of boomers and seniors. These are free and are generally offered bi-monthly on Thursday afternoons.

Adults Who Are Returning to Education: The AWARE Club is designed to support new, returning and continuing adult learners who have had a break in their formal education. They meet informally on alternate Mondays in room KSC185 at 2pm.

Career Counseling staff can assist with returning to the workforce, resume preparation and interviewing skills. They are also a great starting place with help finding on-campus or on-line resources.

Learn what you need to know about Social Security. This course will provide an overview of all the programs dealing with retirement, survivors, disability, Medicare, and supplemental security income benefits. Handouts provided. Register early as this class fills quickly.

Funeral Planning
Now is the time to make the right decisions and help your family deal with loss of a loved one. Remove some of the fear surrounding this topic and learn how to pre-plan your own arrangements or deal with arrangements as a survivor. The Family Estate Planning Kit is included and covers information on wills, living wills, bank accounts, veteran’s benefits, social security benefits, hospice services, death certificates, funeral preferences and cemetery/mausoleum arrangements.

Recreational Guitar for Seniors

This fun course is designed to get you playing the guitar quickly. With recreational guitar, a person concentrates first on learning key chords in keys that enable anyone to be able to accompany themselves with a guitar and sing songs. As you progress, more traditional methods of sight reading sheet music and music theory will be introduced. Emphasis is on fun! Students must provide their own guitar.

Reader’s Theatre
Put your acting skills and imagination to work recreating stories and characters in an amalgamation of radio theatre and storytelling. Classes will emphasize performance skills and ensemble work. Performances throughout the Valley are anticipated and added rehearsals required. Class size is very limited.

Instant Piano for Hopelessly Busy People
You don’t need years of weekly lessons to learn piano! In just a few hours, you can learn enough secrets of the trade to give you years of musical enjoyment. How do we do it? While regular piano teachers teach note reading, piano professionals use chords. In this demonstration course, you can learn all the chords you’ll need to play any song in this one session. Any song, and style, any key! Required materials fee of $30 for workbook and CD is payable in class.

How to Play Piano By Ear
Learn one of music’s deepest mysteries: how to play songs without relying on music. This course will provide a practical presentation of music theory that includes predicting chord progressions, learning from recordings, and transposing - expressed in everyday language. This is an ideal follow-up to ‘Instant Piano’ and is open to anyone who has a basic understanding of chords on any instrument. Required materials fee of $30 for workbook and CD payable in class.

Birdwatching for Beginners
If you are curious about the birds around you but just don’t know where to start, this is for you! Be introduced to the basics of birdwatching and the fun and entertaining way to ‘watch’ them. Learn to spot and identify a variety of birds by sight and sound, how to use a birding book, and use and calibrate binoculars. Text: Peterson’s Field Guide to Western Birds, available at most bookstores and amazon.com. Bring binoculars all classes. For the field trips wear strong, sturdy shoes, bring water, food sunscreen, binoculars and the field guide. Saturday classes will be held off campus.
