Greetings all,
To keep all of you current on the status of the college budget, over the last month, I have provided two updates (10/29 and 11/7). In these updates, I provided information on the steps we are taking to address the known budget reductions for the current and next fiscal years. As you may recall, both our operating and capital budgets are being reduced by $600,000 and $540,000 respectively.
We learned today that the first legislative special session to address the state’s current budget deficit is planned for sometime during the next ten days. All indications are that we will face additional budget cuts this year – although the level of cuts remains unknown. Until we have a clearer understanding of the level of cuts, effective Wednesday, November 26, PVCC has begun a short term hiring freeze of permanent, board approved employees.
The hiring freeze impacts all current searches for permanent, board approved employees. For two mission critical positions – a biology faculty and a financial aid tech – exceptions have been made. Mary Lou Mosley, Shirley Green, Jackie Askin, and Paul Golisch are working with their respective areas to determine short term staffing solutions to meet the needs of the departments impacted by this decision.
As I visit with faculty, staff, and students, I am fully aware that this short term decision will adversely impact areas with pending searches. Unfortunately until the state picture is stabilized, it would be unwise to make future budget commitments. Please visit with your VP or dean if you have questions or concerns.
I am hopeful that the legislators will move quickly to identify strategies to solve the state budget shortfall so we know the impact on PVCC. Until then I ask for your patience and understanding.
On January 9, 2009 an open meeting on the status of the budget will be held – watch for details soon.
As always you can call me directly at 7-6610 if you would like additional information.
Paul
